"Condolences on the game. We've certainly lost our share, especially"

at Jordan-Hare. I spoke and drank with many an Auburn fan the night before the game, and they were as fun and knowledgeable as my two really good Auburn buds, one of whom was at the game on the 50-yard line right behind the Auburn players. (We give our visitors nice seats--on the east side where they can bake in the 90 degree sun!) A Gator friend was directly across the field from him. Both separately remarked at the insanely hard hitting, which they both could hear. It was a very physical game. Each side had its chances. Imo, none of the turnovers on either side were giveaways. The defenses earned them all.

The Gators played their best defense of the season. I have to believe part of it was the atmosphere. The crowd was cranked to begin the game, and then with the first defensive stop followed by the big pass for a TD it simply never let up. It was excited, crazy, frenzied loud. I hoped such an atmosphere would have an effect on Nix, but after watching him against Oregon on a neutral field and at A&M, I wouldn't say I thought it was a given. The UF defense put a ton of pressure on him and played very disciplined ball with the running lanes. They mixed up coverage quite a bit, which I'm sure led to some of the interceptions. (As opposed to say tipped balls or a monster like Derrick Brown in his face.)

I realize some might want to knock Nix for a less than stellar performance. Put in perspective, if LSU came to Jordan-Hare undefeated for a 3:30 game with Gameday in town and Auburn was undefeated and LSU was starting a true freshman QB, you'd probably understand if the LSU true frosh qb had a similar type game. From my vantage high up on the 25-yard line (in the shade!), it was easy to see the Gators playing mainly one deep over the middle, crowding the line, and selling out to stop the run. We brought pressure on the pass plays, but mainly only enough to flush him. He got some yards on scrambles. He's definitely an athlete. But we were clearly trying to prevent any designed runs, especially to the perimeter. Edge defensive players continually went wide to force the action inside, as opposed to trying to push forward to make a tackle. They knew someone would be coming in free behind them to do so.

The game was very close until Perine's run in the fourth quarter. On that play, our Olineman made just enough of a second tier block on the LB to keep him from stuffing the play (really wasn't what I'd call a missed tackle), which sprang Perine one on one with the safety, who did take a bad angle and allowed Perine to get to the outside. If he'd instead forced Perine inside and just got some pads on him, Perine probably would've been tackled. That was essentially the difference in the game.

The Vegas line was more or less a tossup, and that's mostly how the game played out. Neither team has a great offense. Both have some significant weaknesses. The defenses, though, are very, very good, particularly against the run. The Gators couldn't do anything against Auburn's front seven. Perine's one long run was more than twice as much as we gained on the other thirty carries.

The timing was also in the Gators' favor. Auburn played at A&M and MSU at home in the two weeks prior. They had to be at least a little tired and dinged. The Gators played UT, who put up no fight, and Towson. Both at home. So we were nicely rested. For that we get to play LSU at 7 pm in Baton Rouge. Totally different game. Maybe we can pressure Burrow; if not, it'll probably be a long night for the Gators. Some Gators are chomping at the bit over the 13.5 point spread in favor of LSU. I think it's good motivation for our team. I also think LSU can score a lot of points fast and that our strength is along the line of scrimmage rather than the secondary. So we'll see.

You guys now have an off week against bye, and another off week against Arkansas. (Haha.) Then at Baton Rouge. They get to play the Gators and then at MSU. So they're going to be at least a little tired when you face them. As such, y'all will probably be more successful against them then we'll be, especially if they win against us. I'll be rooting for the Tigers in that game. The good ones. That'd be y'all.
