"OK -- as one of you let me say a word to my fellow conservatives here. "

We need to pause and not listen to our fears.  And using past -- real or imagined -- events to justify present ones is poor thinking.  It is like saying that no present crimes can be addressed till all past ones have been.

I believe that there has been uneven treatment of the riots. But to use that to defend the shocking and heinous events of Wednesday is a nest of logical fallicies.  If you visit the Lounge you can find people who will defend their side at any and all costs.  They will defend the indefensible.  Some of us here are mirroring that activity on our side. It is transparent so let us not be like that.  It dishonors the principles that are in there for us somewhere.  Oppose wrong where we see it.  Do not get caught defending the indefensible.

As one who voted for Trump -- and can defend that given the binary choice offered -- I use the same thinking and values to call for his removal now.  But our discussion here needs to take a different tone.

So do not attack straw men.  Try to listen and seek to state -- to your opposite's satisfaction -- the point he is making. If you can't do that you are not welcome here for awhile.  At least by me and I probably agree with many of your  foundational ideas if not your wilder constructions.

“There is no character, howsoever good and fine, but it can be destroyed by ridicule, howsoever poor and witless. Observe the ass, for instance: his character is about perfect, he is the choicest spirit among all the humbler animals, yet see what ridicule has brought him to. Instead of feeling complimented when we are called an ass, we are left in doubt.”  Mark Twain
