When my son was born we arranged for AUMeme to come down to help us care for him. My son's 26 now, anyhow BIGJOE didn't take kindly to her (a) flying on airplane and (b) being out of his sight for more than 24 hours. Regardless my mom flew down (she had been holding a stand by ticket) with the idea that BIGJOE would drive down pick her up and visit the newest grandson and they drive back.
Things went as planned except BIGJOE grew a beard to show his displeasure. And it was a full on beard, I am amazed at how much beard that man could grow. It wasn't ZZ Top or Duck Dynasty but it was a full beard somewhere mid point between Santa and the hipster beard. Think Spencer Hall. It looked awful, BIGJOE hair was a reddish dark blonde before he started going gray, well the beard came out mixture white, gray, the blondish look some gray hair has sometimes and brown. Anyhoo when he showed up at the front door of our townhouse Meme said "ewwwww honey" honey!" and he gave her a bronx cheer. He wore it for about a year or so afterwards, one of the older granddaughters talked him into shaving it.
A couple years later we were talking to my mom about son staying with her for a week or so and my wife said "Now this isn't going to make Grampaw grow a beard is it"
Now we someone asksa favor in our house it is oftern prefaced "now don't grow a beard when I ask you this ..."
