"We had the funeral for my father in law this weekend"

He died Thursday after a 7 week illness battling metastatic renal cancer. My wife had spent most of the past 7 weeks in West Palm taking care of him until he finally succumbed to pneumonia.

George was a quiet, humble man but also a great one. He was initially on his way to become a concert pianist until he decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended med school at Loyola then did an On/gyn residency at Cook county hospital where he became devoted to caring for the less fortunate. He was drafted into the Air Force in 1968, did a brief stint in Vietnam (noncombat) then was stationed in the Azores where my two sisters in laws where born (delivered by him).

He returned to my mother in laws home of West Palm to practice and, though having privileges in the fancy hospital, set up his office in Riviera Beach to be closer to the many indigent patients there. He practiced for 40 years seeing low paying and no paying patients.

A devout Catholic, he provided free ultrasounds and prenatal care at the Catholic Pregnancy crisis center in town and was active e in the ProLife movement even though he himself was too quiet to “protest”. This made him enemies among some pro abortion advocates and his home and office were the targets of arson several times during his career, which led him to become a gun enthusiast. He always carried a .357.

He pursued his childhood dream after retirement and worked as a volunteer fireman/emt until the Palm Beach County Health Department asked him to come back as an OB. He worked there for 12 years for free until his death last week at 85.

I started my own practice just before he retired in the same hospitals he worked at. I was initially bemused to become known as “George’s son in law” but I quickly realized what a compliment that was and how beloved my father in law was by all who met him. I still run in to people whom he delivered.. and we calculated he brought over 6000 souls into this world over his lifetime. George was a role model as a physician, as a father, husband, friend and as a man. He has truly left this world better for his being in it...but today it is a little less bright for those of us who knew and loved him.
