I still remember listening to the local am radio station morning news story of the young former GHS football player whose helicopter was shot down in Vietnam 48 years ago. I was a young child then, and at the time, couldn’t fully understand the grief that my parents were experiencing for this man that I did not know and had never met. I just knew that he must have been very important.
In much later years, I visited the Wall with my parents, and we found this young soldier’s place on the Wall. My dad stood there for a while just rubbing the palm of his hand over this young man’s name.
So, yes, this soldier was very important... as are all the men and women that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
