to have hist first extensive xray/assessment of his intestines- UAB Medical now has a specialist in the MMIHS field- but the doctor couldnt even get into his guts because of complete blockage. As you all know, Alex gets nourishment through a device in his chest but his stomach still releases some fluids into his gut and he would have small BM couple of times a month.. that stopped and for the past couple of months he has been puking alot from the fluid build up in stomach even though his parents have device to suck liquids out, that they have used sicne Alex was a few months old.
The doctors said he has a duodenal web issue- since his birth I have learned a lot of new medical terms. That was a new one on me.
They did surgery Tuesday- they cut a 5-6" incision and the operation lasted about 2 1/2 hours. The surgeon was ectastic about how well it went AND is optimistic that now that they have opened up the entrance to his upper intestines, Alex may be able to gradually have a feeding tube going into his stomach and eventually start with solids.
Howver, they are going to do the Xray exam in about a month and will have a better idea then. Could be they will remove any dead gut and stich the working parts back togather. Or not- they dont know.
Little man with stood this surgery like a champ. Hope to be released Sunday or Monday.
Even though he was still groggy from the morphine, later that night he was still able to mouth......the barn sucks.
