Alex had surgery Wednesday to insert a Broviac (central IV line) and a gastric tube. He handled it very well and had no complications. These two are more permanent replacements for the IV in his head and the drainage tube going into his nose down to his stomach. The surgery was so he can be discharged and go home!! until the genetic results come back in a few weeks. The IV in the side of his head always gave me the creeps.
They also did a cystoscope with his surgery. The urologist used a small camera to inspect Alex's urethra and bladder. He did not see any blockages, and suspects that Alex may never be able to pee completely on his own, meaning he will have to continue to be intermittently catheterized indefinitely. But then again, couple of weeks ago, they said there was minimum function. He sees the urologist in a month to run tests on bladder function.
John and Naomi will have to be trained to operate the devices and the process will begin as early as Tuesday so they can aim for discharge ASAP. Alex has been through so much during his five weeks on earth and still has some challenges ahead of him, but this time two weeks ago, we didnt know if he would ever have a normal life...or even leave the hospital. My little grandmonkey is getting there, slowly but surely. He is a tough little guy.
