I knew her when we were both in Iraq in 2005.
I was somebody that needed the Army way more than it needed me. I was there because I had squandered opportunities in my civilian life and had nowhere else to go.
She was different. She had just earned an associate of Arts Degree, was working full-time as a fire fighter, and was a bright young woman that had the world by it's tail. She didn't really need the Army, and certainly didn't need the Army at a time when most soldiers where deploying for multiple year long deployments to the Middle East. But she joined anyway. And I think that's why it hit me so hard when I found out in 2008 that she had been killed in a convoy in Iraq. A lot of us where just spokes on the wheel. But with her,the Army really got a diamond in the rough. She was actually a somebody, and served her country for no other reason than her desire to do so.
