"We Are Not Updykes"

Edited by Author at 1/7/2014 - 8:25 a.m.

This team lost a nail biter last night with < 20 seconds to go on the clock.  Was I Disappointed?

In some very small way if I am truthful.

But...Perhaps I like underdogs, in fact that certainly is the case, say people who know me.  The Team of Destiny were underdogs in every way: from preseason, to the Iron Bowl, to The SEC Championship game: to a fourteen point underdog in Pasadena last night.

In terms of heart; wanting to, desire, laying it on the ground every play the Team of Destiny stands along side the other greats in the Auburn Pantheon, and, for me, at least, at the very top of such.  I am proud of these young men and  was saddened hardly at all by our lost (and like my father I am not one for morale victories)... excepting this: when I heard our players talking about "how they were sorry they had disappointed their Fans."

This team had many right beliefs this year: the belief in themselves, in their coaches, in hard work paying off. They were right in these beliefs.  But they were wrong about one thing: They did not disappoint the Auburn Faithful.

Oh No.

We are not Updykes.

Cody Parky will recieve no death threats.  He is a fine player and an asset to our team.  We are lucky to have had him on the team and Cody will receive a heroes welcome upon his return to the Plains.

Tre Mason, the Auburn Family will say, is a man of Iron.  He also stands along side the great running backs who graced the Plains.  He has earned this right.

Nick Marshall is a fine captain of the ship and I would sail any ocean or weather any storm with him at the helm.

Our wide recievers caught passes in traffic, gained the yards, and paid the price they knew would be billed.

Our defense, much maligned for the last 30 days, played their hearts out. FSU gained every yard the old fashioned way and I promise you it hurt.

Our offensive line worked their asses off and are winners,  everyone, despite the score last night, the evidence of course being the destruction of the FSU front four on the last drive; with FSU players gasping for breath unable to hold the line whilst we pounded home that last touchdown drive.

Oh, No We are not Updykes.  There will be no death threats to our players, no vandalism of FSU property, no talk of firing our coaches.

And this Team of Destiny will be written into the annals of our Fair School as one of Auburn's finest, along with their forbears  a century ago.

What this team did this year is is best described in the first two lines of the Auburn Creed:

"I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work."
