"RE: The Gheys"

Message Replied To ==========

The Gheys

This Methodist Youth Minister in Mississippi articulates better than I ever could how I feel about this subject, especially since a young lady I know tried to commit suicide.

==============================

While appreciating the

spirit and the intent of the thoughts I have to take issue with him.  This

article suffers from 2 fallacies  1) insufficient options (be indifferent

to biblical teaching about sex or drive teens to suicide)  and 2) the red

herring (teens conflicted about their sexuality attempt suicide because of the

unloving message of the church).  And he

himself demonstrates that he has lost his way and no longer believes in his

calling.

His major point is a

terrible thing to say.  What we believe about our sexuality matters very

much.

Let's remove the

argument one step from the flash point issue of the day.   Same sex

attraction is so covered over with layers of political and celebrity nonsense

that it is hard to talk about and be heard clearly.  Who decides the

meaning and practice of our sexuality in any context – the winds of the given

moment or what God has said in his word?

What about teen agers

who are aggressively promiscuous?  What about a teen ager sexually

involved with a teacher or a coach or an adult neighbor? Is that also something

that does not matter.  The 15 yr old girl or boy who is having

indiscriminate sex with multiple partners of various ages -- do we also say to

him/her it does not matter?  Or do we say this is not what your sexuality

is designed for?   That to make a commitment with part of you that you are

not ready to back up with the rest of your life is damaging to you and to those

around you. It is not more loving but

much, much less loving to tell a teen ager that their practice of sexuality

does not matter.

Finally I understand

those who do not know God and have not taken vows toward him saying silly,

false things about sex. For those whose

reference point is today’s zeitgeist it is a scary thing to be on the wrong side

of the Daily Show and Lady GaGa. But for

those who serve God in the church purchased by his Son he and his word are to

establish our message. For those in the

church the word of God is not irrelevant. His commands are not luxuries we obey or not on whim. For those who claim to know and serve Jesus

Christ our first obligation is fidelity to him and not to the mob screaming “great

is Artemis of the Ephesians.” If those

in the church are going to tell him “no” and advise his people to ignore his

word then they need first to resign their position and renounce their

vows.

Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession.... Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.    ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer
