Back in June, I poasted a question about the best way to get started running as I had had enough of being out of shape and fat. Well, a little over 4 months, 42 lbs. and a brand new pair of running shoes later, I am glad to say that I am up to being able to run 4.5 miles without dying. I may sound like I'm dying, but I regain my composure just short of passing out.
The best advice I was given was to follow the Couch to 5K program, which helped build my endurance over time to where I could actually run for more the 1 minute without collapsing in a heap of gags and awful sounds. It gave me enough confidence to continue to push the distance. The other best advice was getting a great pair of running shoes to fit my style/gait. I used to have bad shin splints. I don't get those with these pair of shoes.
So, thanks to all who gave some great advice. I run 3x/week now, at least 2 miles each time, with one run at least 4 miles. I have my 2nd 5k coming up on 11/23, and hope to do my first 5 mile run in a week or so. My pace is more along the lines of a old person scooter that is running low on battery life, but I finish, dog gone it.
