Question for Evangelicals...
I recently learned that the Women's Rights movement in America began as an evangelical movement (Seneca Falls Convention, 1848, Women's Christian Temperance Movement). This was a little astonishing to me since the modern propoganda is that Christians (in general) and Evangelicals (in particular) want to make women wear the Christian version of the hijab.
And then I remembered that the abolitionist movement and the Civil Rights movement were basically Evangelical movements. But modern Evangelicals mostly get labeled as racists.
I don't get it.
Why do modern Evangelicals not bring up these histories more often? I know, I know... The media has a big microphone. Still... In every single religious debate I've attended, the anti-religion side throws out these images of Evangelicals hell-bent on denying rights and squashing freedoms when quite the opposite appears to be true.
I know, I know... People interpreted the Bible to allow slavery (which is why we have a Southern Baptist Convention) and the Bible says women should be silent and so forth. Still, it's dishonest to ignore the fact that Evangelicals have been at the forefront of some very important American movements.
I don't consider myself an Evangelical, but if I did, I think I'd put a little more emphasis into tooting my horn just a bit.
I know, I know... Pride goeth before a fall and so forth... But still... I can't think that God would mind a little positive PR from the Evangelical set.
So the question is... Why don't you folks play up that history more?==============================
