That is the direction of the zeitgeist and the SCOTUS is reading it with

flawless accuracy.   What democratic and free states like and what makes it possible for them to remain democratic and free are not always the same thing.  Will a SSM cause my own marriage to be less stable?  No.  Has divorce and the careless approach to hetero marriage done harm far beyond that which might be brought by the re-defining of marriage?  And  people living together, the high & of children born to unmarried parents are all devastating culturally and financially. Yes.  These are non sequitur arguments and avoid the central question on this point.

Here is the point as Ryan Anderson & Robert George see it.  Whether the advocates of tolerance will shout them down and seek to silence them or instead engage the arguments remains to be seen.

I am all for some arrangement that gives equal legal and financial rights to all Americans.   A citizen does not cease to be a citizen with rights just because he disagrees with me theologically and ethically.  But we are eroding our foundation and calling it freedom.

==============================

How is this eroding our foundation?  I have struggled with this whole gay marriage thing.  I understand the knee-jerk reaction of aversion . . . I had it . . . and frankly I still do.  But that is an emotional response, and one that my libertarian brain says is wrong.  And after being around gay men I must say my libertarian brain seems to have this one right.  There is only one minor issue with gay marriage that I can find any reason to question in the name of "eroding" . . . and this is simply one small event that might take place . . . if a gay couple and a straight couple of equal qualification wish to adopt a child I think the state should favor the straight couple.

We know today homosexuality is part of the natural order.  We know this from history.  We know this from comparative biology.  In all that time, the phenotype that is homosexuality has remained low enough for the species to survive.  So I can only assume your foundation eroding is a cultural thing.  We embrace far more destructive and far reaching cultural constructs than gay marriage.  And as long as we live in a society that seeks ever to use government to control behavior (a sin to which the church is guilty), I expect and indeed hope the cry of equal protection will ring forth.  Better to get #badword#ed by one dude than 535 dudes.
