I was actually asked by one trustee what kind of "connections" I could bring to bear to "help" Auburn. It felt like a shakedown. Hard to win hearts and minds when the other guy writes a big check. I got my ideas and suggestions out though. My conscience is clear.
I was talking to a couple other candidates before interviews and the consensus was the fix was in. The interview was strictly a public show.
