"As we stand on the verge of the 2012 game against UAT -- congratulations"
to Jay Jacobs, the BOT and the puppet masters who steer AU athletics. You have done what the REC and Nick Saban and the crimson wearing Wal Mart zombies across the state could never have done. Under your guidance our athletic department has become Haiti and our football team has become the Italian navy.
This is the tip of the iceberg -- the most visible element of a situation that is a grief to every one who has attended and loved Auburn. While very few have noticed we now have the worst basketball program in the SEC. We are not always the worst team in the league on a given year but we do have the worst program. Baseball has disintegrated. Swimming was once our jewel and has also declined. In the last 10 years our cross state rival was having their worst run in history and so our own decay was not noticed. We had enough success with great seasons in 2004 and 2010 that few wondered why we did not build on those years but instead coasted to the bottom quickly.
I believe that what we have at present is no accident but is instead exactly what we set out to have -- a program that puts a premium on intimate access by the favored few. We want a coach who can be pushed around and controlled. We want a program that is first of all a private club for the well connected. We want a toy for the puppet masters and plenty of strings to pull. And that is what we have. But Alabama is no longer the bumbling, inept program of 2006 and our bluff has been called.
Tomorrow Alabama will be able to name any final score it desires and Auburn's only hope to hold down the score will be a speeded up clock. If they themselves had designed a plan to give them dominance in sports they would have been embarrassed to dream this big.
I love AU and wish for better days. The legacy and the students and the Alumni deserve better than the leadership that has presided over this collapse.
