RE: This Tragedy Only Underscores My Angst...

there are kids living in hell holes here.

if i were king i would take care of them first.

why does my church take money to be spent in haiti? i bet there are some real poeple who need help right here in orlando.

b/c it makes rich folks feel good. they can go on mission for a week and talk about it with other peopel and show off? dunno. but i wish we did more at home. really....aren't like all relgionis about taking care of your own?

It is much harder to do charity here at home because you ar forced to follow laws and regulations from the US government. To run a charity clinic in the US I have to register with the state, county and local city government (and pay a fee), provide medmal insurance, follow any labor laws for anyone I may hire to help out etc. In Haiti? I just pack a suitcase full f meds and supplies and go. The government there meets me at the airport and thanks me as the stamp my passport. And unlike the US, the people there are grateful. In the US they just threaten to sue you if you don't give them their Percocet.

My buddies and I tried to staff a Red Cross medical relief station after Katrina. The Lousianna state government refused to give us permission to do it unless we paid the fees for Lousianna state medical licenses. No joke.

Besides, with how much I pay in taxes, there is more than enough money for our government to take care of anyone who is needy in the US. In Haiti and other countries, not so much.
