maybe you're shocked b/c that is not how you* and the rest of the updike nation would act.
remember, there are better people than you in the world. those who deal with adversity better. and can better differentiate what is meritous and what is tertiary to real happiness in life.
see,i was not shocked when updike nation cheats, lies and manipulates 18 year old kids for personal aggrandizement, when they play 'take the money and run' or 'preahcers son' at footbball games, or molests collies, or poisons trees, or beats their wive. that, to me is normal for the updike nation.
