I don't think a team can win consistently in this conference without being able to stop the other guy. Last year was an aberration in terms of team success in spite of significant defensive flaws. I still believe you win by running the ball and stopping the run. Part of running the ball is being able to take shots down the field in the air when the D overcompensates. I actually think Malzahn's offense wants to do that. Don't be fooled by all of the motion and formation. When Gus' offense is hitting on all cylinders, there are a lot of power running plays being called. Our line held us back on that this year. Have to have major improvement.
And every team benefits from a good QB. We were not great at that position, but it is harder to judge when the blocking is so poor that even basic plays are breaking down quickly at an alarming rate.
I would like to see Frazier play all the time in the bowl game. Just see what he can do with as much of the offense as he can handle. Let him throw the ball downfield; let him go. If he throws 5 INTs and we get stomped -- at least it is good experience. I don't really buy the wrecking his confidence concern. Jason Campbell was exposed to Dwight Freeney as a frosh QB. He survived and, ultimately, thrived. If Frazier can't handle the UVa defense, then he may not be the ultimate answer. But lets ask some difficult questions and see what the answers are. I don't see how that hurts the program in the least.
