"Football Is Life:"
|
Edited by Author at 10/31/2011 - 1:07 p.m.
CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT Why does it have to be football v. life? Football is life, or at least a part of it. Everything you do is "life." Music, art, job, church, school, hunting, fishing, camping, reading, working and even just sitting around typing on the internet to a redheaded dentist pretending to be a stuffed tiger masquerading as a lawyer is life.
Some of my fondest memories and closest family and friend connections are tied very closely to Auburn football. I can't go to this board or watch Auburn football or go to Auburn University without being reminded in dozens of ways about BIGJOE. I cannot begin to estimate the number of football games my father and I watched together in person or on television. Those are some of the most important moments in my life. If I sat down and counted I could probably number the Auburn games my son and I attended together in person, two of which he was in utero (and he was in utero at Joe Montana's last game Chiefs v. Dolphins--1995).
Football put me through college. I graduated Auburn debt free because Pat Dye was able to kick ass and take names and keep X number of football managers and trainers on the AU payroll.
When I die, I will regret not going to see Muddy Waters live in 1983 and probably a thousand or a million mean, stupid or foolish things I've done or said over the years.
However, I will not regret leaving Hurricane Wilma ravaged south Florida and driving 20 hours over two days with my then ten year old son to see Auburn beat Kentucky or taking advantage of TigerJack and his brother's hospitality and seeing Auburn beat YF with my son in 2006. I will not regret driving all night in 1988 with MAC to Gainesville to see Auburn play Florida. I will not regret driving with BIGJOE in 1973 with Aubiece and his roommate to Knoxville (even though Auburn lost in less than ideal weather) or going with BIGJOE to Nashville in the Jim Rockford Loaner Firebird to see Joe Cribbs score six or seven touchdowns. I won't regret being fired by Pat Dye during the 1981 AU v. Wake Forest game (because we all just showed back up to work on Sunday like it never happened). Just like I won't regret getting married or going to my daughter's ballet recitals, my son's Boy Scout awards or trying to do my duty by my clients.
I love football, and so please don't tell me to not take seriously something that brings me and my family that much joy.
