Saturday afternoon suxed. We looked terrible, they looked great, we couldn’t get out of our own way. I’ve always hated AU playing in Baton Rouge. It seems like we never win over there. In fact we hardly ever do. We have won exactly three football games @ LSU since WWII. THREE for God’s sake. And Tiny Terry was the head coach for two of those. Tuberville coached the last AU victory there in 1999. He lost the next four. Pat Dye never won in Baton Rouge (0-1). Shug never won in Baton Rouge (0-2). Doug Barfield was 0-1. I remember that Barfield loss very well. I had a class with Willie Huntley (RB) under Judge Spud Wright. On Monday night after we lost down there in 1980, Spud thanked Willie for giving us a lead in Baton Rouge for the first time he could remember. Some great years have had the luster taken from them in Baton Rouge (1972, 1988). Baton Rouge is just a tough place for us to get a win and when you are outmanned like we were Saturday, it often gets ugly.
So, all that being said, Saturday was not the end of the world. I believe we beat ole miss this weekend. I believe that after an off week we beat the dawgs in Athens. Then we honor Pat Sullivan with our 8th win in a year that all the talking heads said we wouldn’t win six. Then the sabanites come to town and we’ll just have to wait and see. 9-3 or 8-4, with this team and THIS SCHEDULE, is not the end of the world. Even 6-6 would not be the end of the world and we know it will be at least that.
I think these kids will be embarrassed enough that I wouldn’t want to be an oxfordian this weekend. I think they’ll come out mad as hell and put a whoopin’ on a Nuttjob team that just saw their best effort of the season amount to nothing but a tirade against a reporter.
War Eagle folks, just remember that 1972 AU team that lost to lsu 35-7 in Baton Rouge, beat the number two team in the nation in December when they didn’t have a chance.
