Joseph Avery Miller, Jr. (July 3, 1929-October 13, 2011)
Joseph Avery Miller, Jr. died at 12:45 p.m. CT today. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, Alabama he graduated Ramsey High School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1950. He served his country in the United States Army, seeing combat in the Korean War and obtaining the rank of first lieutenant. After working for the State of Alabama Highway Department and several private firms he founded what is now Miller Triplett & Miller Engineers Inc. in the early 1960's. Mr. Miller devoted many years to youth football as a coach for the Crestwood Colts. He was an avid football fan and a life member of the Auburn Alumni Association. He was predeceased by his parents Mae Brown Jordan and Howard Jordan. He is survived by his much beloved bride of over sixty years, Sara; seven children: Joseph Avery Miller III, Catherine Elizabeth Benton, Howard Phillip Miller, Thomas Brown Miller, James Anderson Miller, Dolly Jane Alyson Stokes and John FOrrest MacArthur Miller; six sons and daughters in law: Lisa Smith Miller, William David 'Skip' Benton, Katherine Wagner Miller, Leigh Lassiter Miller, Jeffrey Stokes and Karen Russell Miller; grandchildren: Sara Elizabeth Wagner; Katherine Page Benton, Joshua David Benton, Avery Ann Miller, Thomas Jordan Lassiter Miller, Jack Miller, Sara Grace Miller, Robert Allen Banks, Anna Leigh Miller and Timothy Miller and one grand son in law Captain Thomas Wagner and a host of friends and colleagues all of whom will miss him very much.
