As expected, a drive-by hit piece by Kevin D. Williamson is found inside. 22 total paragraphs. 8 are devoted to Ron Paul's unelectability on the various issues. 1 paragraph covers a letter Paul wrote in the 1980s which was critical of Ronald Reagan's deficit spending. 1 covers Rand Paul's synthesis of mainstream Tea Party ideas and libertarian ideals. But even here Williamson finds reason to criticize Rand: Paul has the temerity to wear "near neon" colored tennis shoes and "plaid board shorts" at the Iowa State Fair! Can you imagine? A standing U.S. Senator! (Yes, you read that right. The preeminent journal of Conservative thought in America opines that though Rand may be more preferable than his father, his momma still dresses him funny.) The lone favorable paragraph gives Ron an obligatory nod to his pro-life stance.
The remaining paragraphs are devoted to relating how kooky Ron Paul followers are. The usual brick-bats are tossed about. Ron Paul supporters are linked or likened to: John Birchers, hard-money crankcases, New World order black ops conspirators of the "Eisenhower was a communist mole" variety, and the standard bromides of being anti-Semitic and racist. The writer also mentions that Ron Paul supporters are fans of Tolkien. Considering the tone of the rest of the article, I don't believe that was meant as a value-free observation.
And just in case you have withstood the sledgehammer blows to the head and still fail to realize that Ron Paul's supporters are absolutely BATSH1T FUE-KING CRAAAAY-ZEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!, the writer makes a tenuous connection between Ron Paul and Mary Kay Fualau (aka Mary Kay Letourneu née Mary Katherine Schmitz. Yes, THAT Mary Kay Letourneu! ) Apparently, Mary Kay's father, John George Schmitz was a Republican Congressman who resigned from the GOP in protest when Nixon went to China. In 1972, Schmitz ran for President on the American Independant Party. Now, stay seated, because here is the Ron Paul connection to Mary Kay Fualau: Paul's campaign director in Iowa once worked for Congressman Schmitz. That is right! The former Schmitz staffer worked not only for a John Bircher, but one who resigned from the Republican Party in protest! And one whose daughter was #badword#ing nuts! And this former staffer now works for Paul! The entire Paul brand is thereby tainted! So there you have it. (Of course, there is no mention of the fact that Schmitz's son and Fualau's brother, John Patrick Schmitz, served as a former deputy counsel to George W. Bush. Oh well.)
The issue wasn't a complete waste though. In the culture section, there was a thoughtful and suprisingly positive review of the latest film in the Planet of the Apes franchise. As a both a Ron Paul supporter and huge Planet of the Apes fan, I'll take the small pleasures where I can find them.
