He would have been 78 this fall. He lived and breathed Auburn. Born in a small Alabama town, he still had a deep Southern drawl. He had season tickets since he graduated and spent the 60's-90's at the Heart of Auburn on game weekends. Hasn't been able to go to games recently so he showed me his setup. He had his grandson teach him how to use the computer to keep up with Auburn and of course so he could rail against #badword#. He had Directv HD, Comcast cable, a huge antenna and at one point even one of those huge old satellites that I'm not sure still works, but he wasn't going to miss a game. His car tags were RU4AU and RU4AU2.
His son in law told a story about how they met for the first time. His daughter babysat me and I remember when they started dating because the guy looked exactly like Meathead, Archie's nemesis. This would have been early 70's because his daughter graduated high school about 1971 and went to Auburn. Her parents were visiting and she said she had a boyfriend that was coming to take her out. So her dad waited at the dorm main door. The son in law said he drove up in an old car, wearing cut off camo pants, a raggedy t shirt, hair to his shoulders and a long beard and he was barefoot. He didn't see anywhere to park so he drove right up to the dorm door and stepped out. That is how he met his future father in law. It was not a good impression, but they did send their daughter to Europe for the summer hoping when she got back the long haired boy would be gone but they are still married today.
Last fall the Sunday morning after the Clemson game, he came up to me prior to the service. He said he hoped he didn't wake up my children last night when the game ended. He said he went out in the driveway and yelled as loudly as he could (in his deep voice) GO TO HELL CLEMSON!!!! I'm not sure if I laugh about that because he yelled it for his relief after the game, or the fact that he had just yelled it to me in the sanctuary as the service was about to begin :)
