"The Bama excusers are starting to grate on me"

Edited by Author at 2/19/2011 - 1:26 p.m.
CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT If one more Bama fan tries to falsely equate taping a jersey to the Bear Bryant statue, or spreading of rye grass seed, to the intentional poisoning of 130 year old trees ... I think I'm going to implode. The equivalent of taping a jersey to a statue would be the tying of 100 crimson ribbons 'round the old oak trees. It's called a prank. Funny? A bit. Annoying? A bit (that's the point of a prank). But when the jersey is removed, the ribbons are cut down, new grass seed is sown, no damage remains. No harm, no foul. Intentionally killing a living thing that took 130 years to grow is NOT the same, and no amount of mental contortion will make it so.
Similarly, the "it's just two damned trees" argument is patently ridiculous. How many people making this argument would support a law criminalizing the burning of a US flag (which, after all, is "just a collection of red, white, and blue cloth")?
These hate crime type attacks do not try to destroy the thing itself (a tree or some cloth) they try to attack/destroy something that is a SYMBOL; they try to wound a people by destroying something they hold dear. Anyone who fails to acknowledge this -- or minimizes the attack by focusing on the thing itself (ignoring of course its irreplaceability) as opposed to its its significance to people who revere it -- or ridicules the reaction of those whose reverence was attacked -- is part of the mindset that led to the attack in the first place. Their excuse-making is part of the problem that will, somewhere and sometime, lead to the "next one". Their behind-the-scenes snickering is reprehensible. It is evil. It is dangerous.
