When I started school at UAB, they had one of the up and coming research centers for my field (MRI) in the world. They had attracted a dozen top names including several pioneers in imaging and spectroscopy. During the course of my study, they basically decided to stop supporting the center, it became mismanaged and most of those top names left. The last of the imaging researchers will be retiring this year and there are no new ones coming in. In a little over a decade UAB went from being on the cusp of being a major player in this area of research to being completely out of it, due to nothing but simply not giving a crap and mismanaging the thing away. That is ok, however, since they are addressing much more important issues like a nice new stadium for a team no one wants to watch.
