There, I said it too. Is Scarbinsky really gonna raise eyebrows at CGC for THAT four letter word? Is that very word and the word "Hell" (or variations of them) not in the Bible and also read aloud in passages each and every Sunday?
"War Damn Eagle".....How many times have you heard that? When was the first time you heard it? I'll bet you were pretty young. When it is compared to what is accepted in prime time television, how bad can the word DAMN really be?
I know children were present and I am sure some parents winced when they heard him say it. To them, I beg them to deal with it in a manner they see fitting. It is a cheer that probably first came to light the same day that eagle from the battlefield took flight so many years ago.
As a representative of Auburn, you may think it was "unbecoming" of a head coach. But good grief! He was only repeating what has been said millions of times before. There is merchandise sold in Auburn with the words "WAR DAMN EAGLE". And now we have to question Coach Gene for repeating it?
Compare that to what you might hear from a drunken fan, in the stands, when there is a failed attempt on 4th and one. Or maybe even when Auburn has to take an unduly timeout....misses an extra point or fails to cover a wide open receiver. Suddenly, DAMN is much easier to handle is it not?
"Damn the torpedoes....full speed ahead!!"........"Frankly my dear, I don't give a DAMN!" Sound familiar? I bet it does to your children.
I have two young children and I constantly have to talk to them about words like "fart", "ass", "bitch", "whore", etc. which are prevalent on prime time TV and countless other ways. In the end, I am left to tell them that while it is inevitable that they will HEAR such words, it is not necessary that they USE them. IMHO, "damn" is not nearly as bad, in comparison to other words they will most certainly hear or see. Come to think of it, DAMN is the least of my worries given what you can find on TV, Radio, Newspapers, Teh internet, at school, etc.
Keep saying it coach. If that is the worst language you can muster, I will deal with it by teaching them to say WAR DAMN EAGLE when it is called for. And in doing so, they will be no less an Auburn Man (or Woman) than the throngs of Auburn Men and Women who have said the same.
Much ado about nothing...DAMMIT.
WEAGLE, WEAGLE....WAR DAMN EAGLE KICK EM IN THE BUTT, BIG BLUE! HEY!
I leave you with this linky from the Auburn.edu website. I'm sure that you can find many more examples with a simple search.
