From where I sit, AU football is such a part of my life that I will grind my teeth on every play no matter how good, bad, or indifferent the squad happens to be. Obviously, seasons like this one are wonderful and to be treasured, but in a weird way so are seasons like 2008. One quick example springs to mind. We all admire Kodi Burns. But we probably do not feel the same kind of admiration toward him without 2008. Plus, we have sucked worse than 2008 in my lifetime, more than once. Given good health, we will probably suck worse than 2008 again in my lifetime, maybe more than once. I hope not, but it will not be shocking.
It is all worth it. As much as I kid and tease and smartass, I am quite serious here. I was thinking about this last night while I was watching the 30 for 30 thing on SMU. If suddenly faced with the prospect of no Auburn football like SMU fans were in 1987, I would have some serious adjusting to do. I would like to think that I am well rounded and capable enough to fill the void if that became necessary. But make no mistake: it would be a considerable void.
So, sucking on offense and floundering through the season like 2008 -- War Eagle!
Playing beautiful football but not getting to to the BCS because of a massive screwing like 2004-- War Eagle!
Winning some we have no business winning while losing some we have no business losing a la 2002 and 2007? War Damn Eagle!
I feel the same about this spectacular season, win or lose in Glendale. Of course, I think we will win. And I remind Hobbes that every time AU has won a game in the last 40 or so years it has happened after I picked AU to win.
There is the old saying among beer drinkers: all beer is good beer; some beer is better than other beer. Auburn football is the same for me.
