That one was the lowest low and highest high. Have now trained both son and daughter to demand respect behind the front lines in enemy territory. This was daughter's first trip.
This is true story. Took son's girl friend, of about a year, with us. Comes from a devout bammer household but the type I can "watch a game with". Sports savvy, athletic type, very competitive but realistic. Now, she saw her first college football game in person this year when Auburn played Clemson. Had a blast and thought Auburn was beautiful. Didn't change a thing however.
I sat her in the lower bowl last night among the truest blue blood bammers that exist and sent my 6-6 250lb son with here wearing his orange barner hoodie. The daughter and I climbed the West Vance Alps to the north uppers with other barners. Some time near the end of the 2nd quarter, when things looked the worst, I got a text from her. In summary, She said she hated this place and had never been more embarrassed by a classless sea of read necks. I didn't think she was serious, but turned out she was. Said she didn't want to be a part of a fan base that acted like that.
Later over dinner, she explained several observations of the bammer fan base including this comparison.....
"Whenever something went bad for them, if things didn't look good, everybody just quit and sat down. Even the student section. At Auburn, they didn't do that. It really felt more united and more like family at Auburn."
All that I had to do with this was that I exposed her to both up close. Her parents raised her to cheer for bama and she was happy with that. I figured she was having the time of her life down there and come to find out, she was actually seeing the light in a way that so many never really do. She's a smart girl, one I think would make a fine daughter-in-law.
I can say this with all certainty. The more I expose my own two kids to both worlds, the more they love Auburn. That's just a fact.
