Sure, former Rep. Robert Bentley will be Governor and head of the Executive branch.
But, Bentley has already conceded the wishes of his fellow Republicans in the two houses, as to leadership positions (the Legislature, as you know, set upon a course of independence from influence of the Governor in 1987, and the prime architect of this was the late Speaker Jimmy Clark).
For example, Bentley's arch-enemy, Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn) will be elected Speaker of the House (succeeding Auburn graduate Seth Hammett) in the Special Session in December, and again in the Organizational Session in January. Hubbard is also President of the AU Network, as well as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
In the Senate, Auburn graduate Senator Del Marsh (R-Anniston) will be elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Senator Jabo Waggoner (R-Mountain Brook) will be elected Senate Majority Leader. He is a huge AU supporter, and his son Jay played baseball at AU in the mid-90's.
In additon, Auburn graduate Kay Ivey will be inaugurated Lt. Governor in January, and, pursuant to the Constitution, will be ex-offico President of the Senate.
Moreover, as you know, the number of attorneys in the Legislature has steadily declined in the past two decades - a far cry from the dominance of yesteryear.
As for machinery, the emergence of the two-party system in Alabama, now at both the state and local level, cuts across school affiliation, and the long-held belief that "the machinery" is controlled by Bama has been a myth for 40 years now.
But, I do appreciate the detailed information you provided in support of your argument.
You would be surprised at the number of people who still hold to old myths regarding control of "the machinery" in Alabama.
Since they are the flagship university of the State, they are the ones who put out the bulk of Lawyers-nee-politicians in the State. Thus, they're the political machinery.
