Some of you may remember my Auburn Can't Win posts of the last two years. Stories of Travis Tidwell, Mailon Kent, Pat Sullivan, David Langner, Bo, Pat Nix, Lectron Williams, and Tre Smith. I posted them during bammer week the last two years with a final line that "it's time to strap it up and get it on" in my hopes that an underdog Auburn team would pull off an upset. Well, here we are again.
Despite a glorious 11-0 season, we face tha' tahd as an underdog amid an assault by the media and all the enemies of Auburn doing all they can to tear us down. But I won't post the hopes of a desperation win. I will simply say that I don't believe this Auburn team will lose. I don't think they even consider losing a possibility. I am proud of this team. The O Line who have taken the challenge, the receivers who block as well as they catch, #17 giving everything he has on defense and bringing it every down. Etheridge coming back, Fairley's intensity, Wes Byrum being money when needed, Kodi Burns complete lack of ego. And of course Dyer, O'mac, and Fannin (despite the fumbles) are all great Auburn men.
And Mr. Newton, Cameron Newton, I believe he is perhaps the greatest football player we have ever had. I realize this may be blasphemy to some and I love Bo Jackson as much as anyone. However, I believe Cam may be the best player ever to play football in this conference. I believe that he would be a Heisman trophy candidate as the QB of Stanford or BSU. I believe he would be a Heisman trophy candidate as a running back at Oregon. I believe he would be All American at Linebacker, Defensive End or Tight End anywhere he chose to play. I don't believe there has been an athlete like him before. No one has had all of the speed, size, shiftiness, pocket presence, vision, and everything else in one package. When he's on the field I am reminderd of film I have seen of Wilt Chamberlin in the 60s when he was six inches taller than everyone else; very athletic, and only Bill Russell even had a chance against him.
I am proud of this team. The only teams I can remember being this proud of are the 72 & 93 teams. I loved the 83 team, basked in the glow of the 04 team, shuddered every time Tracy Rocker almost killed an opposing QB, and think Brandon Cox was one of the most underappreciated players in AU history. But this team, Cam Newton's team, is special.
So I don't think this AU team needs the magic of the past to win. SO no "Auburn Can't Win" posts. While the ghosts of Tidwell, Sidle, and all the rest will watch over them on Friday, I think they will win because they are the best team and will refuse to lose.
But, with my personal bias toward history, I would be remiss if I didn't mention this. The last time a player named Newton played a significant role for Auburn in an AU-bammer game.....legends were made that will live for 100 years. May it be so on Friday. War Eagle!!!!
