It is impossible to keep up with the information and misinformation swirling around, and even more difficult to separate the nonsense from the sense. My focus, however, is only on Auburn. What MSU has done and what may or may not happen to them is irrelevant to me except for how it affects AU.
In terms of Auburn, there are two mutually exclusive possibilities that are black and white for me: 1) Auburn (directly or indirectly) paid Mr. Newton for Cam's signature, and 2) Auburn (directly or indirectly) did not pay Mr. Newton for Cam's signature.
I hope and pray scenario 1 isn't true. If it is true, I hope we don't get caught and are so scared by the white hot heat of this mess that we never go down that road again (i.e. do NOT learn the lesson "we are so smart we can get away with it"). If 1 is true and we get caught, we deserve any punishment that is meted upon us.
I hope and believe scenario 2 is true. Therefore, I do not believe we should be in too much danger of crippling NCAA sanctions (i.e. probation, reduced scholarships, etc). Why? I think it is a given that AU (via its rigorous compliance dept), the SEC, and the NCAA have been involved in this thing for months. I believe Auburn's been acting in good faith to manage a situation that is neither of its creation nor under its control. AU chose to play Cam and if he eventually ends up ineligible, we may be forced to vacate our wins, but we shouldn't be subjected to stringent NCAA penalties simply because we rolled the dice and played him based on imperfect information.
I am OK with us having rolled the dice and playing Cam given the information that AU had to work with at the time. At this point I also say "in for a penny, in for a pound" and say we play him unless irrefutable proof comes out that would make him ineligible (i.e. AU paid him).
I am confused by the NCAA saying it's an offense if Mr. Newton asked MSU for money (or had Mr. Rogers do so on their behalf), which implies that Cam's eligibility would be forfeited. Didn't Albert Means play for Memphis after he left Bama, even though it was abundantly clear that he had been bought and paid for by another school's booster without the knowledge of the institution? I don't know all the facts of that case, but was he eligible at Memphis b/c it wasn't his family who sought the compensation, but rather his coach? Was he ineligible until the NCAA restored his eligibility and he could then play for Memphis? I ask these questions b/c if my scenario 2 turns out to be the truth and had nothing to do with AU, isn't Auburn like Memphis in the Means case?
Bottom line: BEAT THE DAWGS!!! WAR DAMN!!!
