"No, baseball needs less Cowboy Joe West, less..."
|
CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT Hunter Wendelstedt, and less Angel Hernandez.
Umpires are going to blow calls. The strike zone is not going to be the same from umpire to umpire. That's one of the cool things about baseball, actually. Yes, there are rules, but the interpretation of those rules is what matters.
It's like the judicial system in that regard. Asking if there should be instant replay in baseball is sort of like asking if the Supreme Court should be subject to instant replay.
So, the structure is fine. The problem is that a lot of people who serve in the role of umpire think they are bigger than the game. If, at the end of the game, you don't know the name of the umpire, then they've done a great job. People like Cowboy Joe West, Hunter Wendelstedt, and Angel Hernandez can't get out of the way of their own egos to call a game. That Hunter Wendelstedt is a playoff ump is a travesty.
We need umps like Jim Joyce. Yes, I know he blew THE CALL this year, but he called it like he saw it. In the heat of the moment on a very public stage, he stuck by his conviction - not because he needed to be right but because he really thought the runner had beat the throw. Was he right? No, but that's baseball. The way he handled that situation tells me that he is a good umpire. He realizes the game is not about him.
So, no we don't need more replay. We need more Jim Joyce.
