Well, my reasoning would be to humiliate the Tide further. To say, in effect, despite the flagrant infraction of the rules by your 5-star bought and paid for cornerback who is preventing a traditional two-handed catch by holding down the receivers arm while simultaneously attaching himself to the receiver's shoulder pads, this less heralded Carolina receiver has caught the ball, shed the aforementioned mercenary 5-star as one would brush a leaf, a small insect, or something equally trivial off one's jacket before entering a dwelling, and has sped another 40 yards downfield right in front of the Bama bench. The flag is the punctuation mark on the elegant declaration that, despite best efforts topped with a cherry of cheating, the Tide has FAILED.
