As I have said many times, the Dems don't really want this to pass (perhaps Obama does, but the bulk of the Dem leadership does not). The trick is, they have to make it look like the Republicans killed it, and not just that the people don't want it. Then they can campaigon on the theory that they really, really tried, but those evil Republicans wouldn't go for it.
They have packed the bill with outrageous provisions that no one wants just to make sure it won't pass....I don't think they foresaw the Mass. issue though, which now makes it obvious the people don't want it either.
