CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT on the planet.
"This statement of contrition, I believe, will make Mark's re-entry into the game much smoother and easier."
Really? He admitted to using performance enhancing drugs during his career. In case you don't understand the meaning of that sentence, I'll dumb it down...He cheated.
Oh, he only did what others were doing you say? It wasn't banned by the league at that time you say? Everyone knew it was cheating and they only did it because you didn't have the balls to say it was cheating and make it prohibited by the league. You were too concerned with recovering from a strike and keeping people interested in the game. Why wouldn't you just give each person that bought a jersey a little vial of crack instead. That would have kept the revenue stream going for you.
And Mr. McGwire,
"There's no way a pill or an injection will give you hand-eye coordination or the ability or the great mind that I've had as a baseball player," he said. "I was always the last one to leave. I was always hitting by myself. I took care of myself."
You had a career .263 batting average. Sorry, that doesn't get you in the top 1000 on the career average board. Lou Gehrig-.340, Hank Greenberg-.314, Jimmie Foxx-.325, Willie Stargell-.282, Will Clark-.303. Those are first basemen that had hand-eye coordination and could put up some home runs, as well as hit for average. Hell, even Palmeiro hit at a .288 career average. You were juiced enough that on the rare occasion that you made contact, it went out.
If McGwire is allowed into a major league park, Pete Rose should be allowed in. He would be a far superior hitting coach to McGwire. Hopefully the Hall of Fame voters see this charade as exactly what that and do not vote McGwire into the Hall of Fame. If Pete isn't there (and I don't think he should be either), McGwire doesn't deserve it either.
America was greatly wounded with the introduction of the DH 37 years ago (Thanks for the reminder Booty), yesterday it might as well have died. I can't wait to get George Will's take on the matter.
