I think a WV-type spread offense would have probably been adequate at auburn. It is that you ran a style of offense (whether it was a spread or not) that didn't fit the personnel at hand at all. The biggest questions auburn had was at QB and at WR, while the biggest strength was at RB and OL (or at least it seemed going in, I am not sure how big a strength the OL ended up being in the end). Switching to a pass first, then pass second offense seemed like insanity just on its face. To further compound things for the future, that year's recruiting class was tailored toward players to run an offense that had little chance of success, thus risking the possibililty of essentially losing one offensive class if things didn't work out. I have seen a lot of self-inflicted wounds dished out by both schools, but that one has to be one of the more bizarre in recent memory, considering how well the previous system had worked for y'all.
