wrote better than he lived. Certainly among the pantheon of the FF but lags behind the contributions of Adams, Hamilton and everyone is in the shadow of Washington who is acknowledged by his peers and by historians as the one indispensable man in the founding of America.
He was gifted as a writer, and at arguing his case. But he was such a study in contradiction. Wrote of the freedoms of man and owned slaves, championed fiscal responsibility and died in deep debt, stood against federalist usurpation and yet his great achievement as POTUS was the Louisiana Purchase which was start to finish the antithesis of his stated views.
