Not unless those ridiculing want to marginalize their objections to him and his policies. It was wrong to call Pres. GW Bush a monkey, but the historical racial connotation in this instance makes it a complete no-no for Pres. Obama in my book. The world is not fair, and language is not always logical. But if the opponents of Obama cannot see how counterproductive calling the current president, or any member of his family, a simian name is, then they are not very bright. And any principled outcry about double standards will be lost in an outcry of racism, which, in this particular case, cannot be dismissed out of hand because of the history of the simian based slurs against blacks. I agree with WDE. This is not a hill to die on in the war against double standards.
A black man is POTUS. He is the most powerful man in the world. He should be subject to all the ridicule the previous POTUSes were. It is the nature of the job.
