I accept that we are certainly not perfect today and that we never will be in the future. That said......we have the oldest continuously functioning constitution in the world. We were the first true representative democracy in over 2,000 years. We afford protections to the individual against the power of the state that cannot be found anywhere else on earth-even to this day. When we became huge and powerful due to our freedom we used our power in a way that was unique to all great powers in history. Unlike all other great powers who lorded their power over others, raped the land, enslaved the people in one way or another, etc. we gave even our former enemies freedom, democracy and self determination. Then we gave them vast sums of money to prevent the kind of political instability that could allow scumbags to take advantage of their desperation to steal that freedom we gave them......This is exactly the opposite of what other great powers before us did. We were anti-colonialist and championed the right of self determination of peoples. At the height of our power when we had the world's largest navy, the world's largest airforce, 16 million troops in uniform, a monopoly on nuclear weapons and an economy that was cranking out 45% of the entire world's GDP.....at a time when we could have joined with our brothers in the Anglosphere and simply taken the entire frikkin' planet had we wished....we demobilized and brought the boys home. We even founded an organization (the UN) designed to allow all countries to have a voice, allow disputes to be settled peacefully and consensus to be reached before any military action was taken (at least these were the hopes). All of this was a direct limit on the awesome, overwhelming power we wielded. Again, this is unprecedented in human history. The world is DAMNED LUCKY there is a United States of America and that it is America which is the great power of the day.
