Now – a midwinter look at basketball.This is an interview that WHAB conducted with
me because of my interest and insight into basketball no one else here much
cares about basketball.
WHAB :So how does
this year’s team look?How will they
finish?
RT :They are
taller.Actually this team has had some
surprising wins – on the road against VA and ARK and at home against UT.There is a good combination of talent, size
and experience and this is a good Div 1AA team.
WHAB:You either don’t
listen or are not very bright.Answer the
question.
RT :This team has 3
SEC wins, half way to the 6 I predicted as a good goal for them.They have home games vs Ole miss & ARK and away games vs
UGA and UAT that are games AU could win.So – a 6 – 10 SEC record w/ an outside shot at 7 – 9.All in all not bad.
WHAB :And what does
the near future hold?
RT : I am sure they will get to play in the SEC tournament
this year.
WHAB : Isn’t that automatic for SEC schools?
RT :Yes.It means they are not leaving the SEC anytime
soon?
WHAB :You mean like
the way UK
went to the Big 10?
RT : Exactly
WHAB : You have said that AU has the worst basketball
program in the SEC.But this year UGA
and UAT are worse teams and ARK
looks bad as well.
RT :Now who is not
listening.I still contend that they are
the worst program.Take a 20 year look
and factor in – W/L record, post season
appearances, SEC finish, attendance and cheesy
gimmicks at home games and I am sure we are the worst.Other teams may have individual years when
they have a worse team for that season but I believe we still are the
worst.
WHAB :This whole
interview thing feels like a ruse to me.Are you not just pretending to be WHAB and asking yourself questions –
if this is in fact really you – and then answering them?
RT :Heh heh.I would like to state emphatically that the
WHAB Board was NEVER down and all rumors that it was are lies fomented by the running
dog lackeys of the forces of imperialism.
WHAB :Whatever.Will Jeff Lebo be the AU coach in the
2009/2010 season?
RT :I like Coach
Lebo and hope he remains as coach.I do
not think it is good for a program to have too much coaching turnover.But I also hope expectations for AU
basketball are higher than what has happened under his leadership.
WHAB :If he were to
be replaced who would you think AU should hire?
RT :CG usually has
some inside info about that somehow.I
am not sure where he gets it but rumors have linked him to Trotsky-ite factions
and other subversives.Chuck Person would be an interesting
possibility.
WHAB : Finally , the
episode of many years ago which has scarred you for life – when you went to a
Basketball game with the promise of free t-shirts and there were in fact no
t-shirts forthcoming for yourself or the impressionable little children with
you.The entire board would like to hear
again – in minute detail the entire event and how you felt about it. . . .
RT :(sob) Well I am
glad you asked . . . . . .
WHAB : But I see we are out of time.
