of this board. I was on the way to a Red Cross board meeting when it occured to me how unnecessary it was to have a local Red Cross. Or a Soup Kitchen, or a Meals on Wheels, or a Foster Care Center, or a Lee County Association for Retarded Citizens. And thus we wouldn't need a United Way to fund them. There would be no need to raise funds for scholarships. We could merely abdicate these responsibilities to our Federal government. The decisions and monetary allocations determined in Washington DC could be made much more fairly and efficiently using a political process and a centralized clearing house. And besides, we don't actually want to see these people we are helping in our communities. We could stop this pretense of having sense of satisfaction in helping our fellow man, and personally directing our efforts in that regard. The dole of our Great Society would alleviate the need to have such feelings.
Another option might be to keep some of the not-for-profit organizations, but just reorganize them and staff them with federal employees supported by federal funding. But we'd have to rename the Red Cross, due to the separation of church and state. Maybe we could call it Red Light instead. I hear they have a whole district of them in Amsterdam.
Our churches could then focus on improving and expanding their houses of worship, as opposed to community welfare activities. We could make great advances in the arts of stained glass and woodwork, which would stimulate the economy! And my what fancy prayer books and bibles we could have!
