era Alums (read anyone who graduated AFTER "Bo went over the top")) is that they don't understand what it was like to get the cr*p kicked out of us year in and year out at Legion Field, UAT's real home field. Current students have Daddy's Toyota Highlander parked outside of their "single room suite" accommodations and, in, one of the worst breaches of AU traditions, roll Toomers at home games (when I was at AU the very few times we DID win away games are seared in my mind).
Those who graduated after 1983- yeah, they can make fun of Coach Dye and his strange ways- but they don't REMEMBER- that it was Dye who led us out of a truly dark era- the Barstool era...and there are those who still have breath in them that remember the Earl Brown era- and what the GREAT Shug Jordan did for the program. Our grandparents passed us stories of the Superb Mike Donahue and the traitor Boozer Pitts. But has anyone reminded this spoiled generation of what it was like in '49 or worse yet '79?
G*D how I remember sitting with my brother in Legion Field in 1977- on the first play of scrimmage- watching James Brooks scamper around end for a TD...and then watching BAMA score 5, or was it 6 ?,unanswered touchdowns- or sitting in Neyland Stadium watching Bill Battle's vols punt on third down in a driving rainstorm...
or watching the GREAT Thomas Gossom being forced out of bounds before catching what would have been a game winning touchdown throw from Gargis in the third quarter of the 1974 Auburn-Alabama game. And watching in disbelief when the touchdown was called back and then listening to those foul crimson excuses for human beings taunt us as once again we left their HOME stadium, Legion Field with a loss..
But of course without the valley of despair their can be no mountain of triumph... like the memory of going crazy in the upper deck and swinging my soon to be wife around in a circle after we FINALLY beat BAMA after 10 years- and yelling like an insane maniac while what seemed to be the entire AUstudent body parading the torn down goal post around like a victory totem...I ask you, Mr. Big Joe ,when was the last time the entire Auburn Fan contingent sat in the stands for an hour after a game cheering and screaming, laughing and crying and hugging?- I say to you that it has been a LONG time...
I also recall that glorious fall day in Auburn and watching Coach Dye fulfill his "I have a dream" vision that every football team will be able to play its rival with a homefield advantage at least once a year. I knew that on that day ,regardless of the score or the outcome, this was the greatest victory in Auburn history. When were the alumni last energized like they were on that historic day?...
Yes- I think the entire Auburn oard of Directors is pretty much a bunch of cowardly misfits (who through their shennagans almost lost Auburn its academic accreditation) and yes we all know that Jay Jacobs body has been taken over by some nefarious alien...but as you say, Mr. Big Joe,...this will pass...we have seen bad days...but , Mr Big Joe You and I, why we have also been to the mountain top...we have seen the valleys also and, yes, we may not pass over the river Jordan...we may not make it to the promised land of a 14-0 National Championship Season...
but you and I, we do have a dream...shared by most battle scarred alums...that one day...little orange and blue boys and girls will walk hand in hand past little bammer boys and girls in red and white and be able to hold their heads high and say with GREAT pride "Kiss my ever loving A** you bunch of UAT losers"
God Bless our Football Team and May God Bless Auburn University
