I've never understood the line "If he really cared he wouldn't be duck hunting!"
Really? So, spending some free time away from your occupation means you don't care as much as you could about that occupation?
I don't think he went for that job. I think he took the same duck hunting trip that they always took that time of year.
And if he was job searching, I think "jetgate" is the answer to your "what gave him the right" question.
