I fully understand what you are saying, and it makes sense as a view of what is happening now.
But, I am a contrarian on this.
I believe the next four years will result in just the opposite of what you surmise.
In essence, I think we will see a renewed rise in nationalism, not on in this country but in Europe, for example, as well.
Milton Friedman said the proof of the soundness of the Euro was if it could survive its first recession - on that score, it appears the Euro is a flop. Germany, particularly, will be becoming more nationalistic, and Britain was a reluctant participant in that whole "one Europe" notion, as well.
No, I think the "one world" view, aside from trade, is already becoming passe' as a political philosophy.
So, I do believe we will witness a gradual rise in nationalism across the world. Gradual, mind you, but eventual....
I think it is over. America that is. The problem is not one person like Obama, it is the fact that enough of the electorate have bought into the nanny state cradle to grave while the other half buys into the big brother keep me secure psychology.
The combo can only lead to a more intrusive government on all counts.
It is not that America will suddenly be a third world country within our or our children's lifetimes. It will still be a pleasant place to live. It is just that it will be "just another" country, like most of Western Europe. If we want our children to suceed in life, then we will have to adopt the practices of what the succesful people in foriegn countries do, and that is raise our children to be citizens of the world with allegiance to no one particular place. Educate them to have skill sets which are needed throughout the world, be fluent other languages, etc.
