Re: Head Football Coach Tommy Tuberville

Dear Dr. Gogue:

My name is Joseph A. Miller, Jr. I graduated from Auburn University (A.P.I.) With a Degree in Civil Engineering. I am the proud father of seven children (Joseph A. III; Catherine E.; Howard P.; Thomas B.; James A.; Jane A.; and John F. M.) Who all attended Auburn University. My 2 daughters are married to Auburn Graduates and one of my sons married into an Auburn family of numerous Auburn Graduates. My oldest granddaughter just graduated from Auburn and I have 2 grandchildren who are current students at A.U.

I have purchased scholarships to Auburn for two of my grandchildren and 3 others intend to attend A.U.

I am certain there are not many other families in the Auburn family as mine. As patriarch of this family and with the full consent of each one, we offer you the following facts, comments and requests.

1. Coach Tuberville has brought the Football program of this University from the absolute nadir to a being a perennial contender for the top ten programs in the country. He has done this in a completely moral way by attracting and recruiting young men having good character and ambition. One of the first things he did upon arriving was to establish a strong F.C.A. chapter, maintaining it and further strengthening it. One does not continually read of Auburn athletes continually embarrassing the university—they reflect favorably for it.

2. The majority of the sports news media of the state of Alabama desperately want to remove Auburn University from it’d position of being the premier football power in Alabama , replacing it with their favorite, the University of Alabama. They have tried hurting our recruiting in every way possible including printing scurrilous stories last season concerning the intent of Coach Tuberville to seek the Head Coach Position at the University of Arkansas, or of Texas A. & M.

3. In trying to move the program forward, Coach Tuberville made a bad decision in hiring a new offensive co-ordinator. He corrected that decision immediately upon realizing what type of character this man had. The News Media (particularly the Birmingham News and a completely unethical columnist for the Mobile Press Register –who also is a scurrilous radio talk shoe host) are doing their best to hurt our recruiting an sow seeds of discontent within the Auburn family. A few fair weather friends and other hyenas are joining them

4. Soon you will probably say that you , the Athletic Director, and the Board of Trustees have given Coach Tuberville a VOTE OF CONFIDENCE.

I earnestly beseech you NOT to do that. Come out with a simple statement to the effect that : COACH TOMMY TUBERVILLE IS OUR HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. HE IS ONE OF THE TOP COACHES IN THE COUNTRY AND HE WILL REMAIN OUR COACH FOR SO LONG AS HE DESIRES. THE CHOICE WILL BE ENTIRELY HIS. WE ,THE AUBURN FAMILY , BOTH WANT AND NEED HIM.

Respectfully submitted;

Joseph A. Miller, Jr, B.S.C.E. 1950
