Terra firma has become an extinct commodity in Auburn, AL this season. Its apparent in the results, not even considering the speculation of where we're headed. After Vandy/Franklin, I was hoping the head coach would take the entire team and bring them back into the fold...rally pride, articulate confidence, demand execution in a fundamental approach to playing the game, and place that responsibility on the position coaches to enforce a return to the basics with their players. What I witnessed on Saturday was a display of lost composure across the entire spectrum of the football program . I don't care about any coach's status at Auburn, I don't care about anyone whose drawing a paycheck to do a job. The problems exceed the rationale of past accomplishments.
I do care about a group of senior players who envisioned (and were sold on) a season of success that would either propel them into the next level of football, or, and more importantly, secure a meaningful chapter in their lives as Auburn men. The underclasssmen might still have an opportunity for the aforementioned success, but this senior class will go out with memories that no athlete should have to take with them. Bosley, Doolittle, Davis, Dunn, Ty Green, M Johson, Lester, Hastings, Swinton, Rod Smith, and Vickers....all Seniors. Few if any will get a sniff at the next level because a decision was made to trump "talent" with technique....and no one needs to be reminded how poorly this decision was arrived at and/or executed.
I feel frustration and anger for the poor showing that we witnessed so far this season, but I hate it more for those who'll never get another shot at making it right again. My hats off to these guys. The underclassmen typically make it point to send off their senior class by continuing the traditions and disciplines that they encountered on the day they arrived to suit it up for Auburn football. Auburn coaches decided upon a course of action (in the offseason, as well as throughout the course of this season) which negated said underclassmen an opportunity to fulfill this goal. The senior athletes deserved better.
