"An Honest Request to Auburn Fans"
|
CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT Dear Auburn Fans:
I am writing to you as a Southern sister from a fellow beloved SEC team, Louisiana State University. Yes, we are archrivals on the field…and how much fun is THAT!!!! But there is a certain love that we all share within the Southeastern conference. I know y’all feel this way, too. I even had a fantastic time tail-gating with some Auburn Tigers at your last trip to Baton Rouge. Great game, by the way. ;-)
Something happened to me the other day that was so strangely hurtful, that I felt I must voice it to you all. And this looked like the happening place for all things Auburn!
A little background first: My father was born in Eutaw, Alabama. Got his undergrad at Georgia Tech, and his Masters and PhD at Alabama. My mother is from Birmingham. Received her undergrad at Birmingham Southern and her Masters at Alabama. Many of my extended family, graduated from Auburn, and there are currently family who are Auburn Tigers. So Alabama connections are very important to me.
My parents moved to Baton Rouge while my mother was pregnant with me, so my Dad could take a teaching position at LSU. So I came into the world an LSU Tiger, and now I’m a Registered Nurse who still bleeds purple and gold. And needless to say, with those three schools represented, family gatherings are a real party!
Last weekend, I was at Gulf Shores for a family reunion. I was at the grand opening of the Hangout restaurant with my two twenty-something sons. We got into a lively discussion with a group of four guys from Auburn on all things football. From the perils of Ryan Perrilloux , to Nick Saban and Les Miles and all points in between. We were having a great time.
Then one of the guys said something that took me completely off guard. He said, “Well, it’s not true after all. All LSU fans don’t smell like corndogs”. I was taken aback. What did that mean? He proceeded to tell me that it was well known that all LSU fans smell like corndogs. I asked him where had this come from? I had never heard this. Why do they say this? He said he didn’t know, but he said it’s just a fact.
You know, I’m not even going to BS you on this one. That really smarted. All the fun and trash talking went out of my conversation with the Auburn guys after that. I guess it’s because this was a personal insult, it’s so ridiculous, it has no basis in reality and it is somehow very devaluing. Just try it on for size yourself….. How would you like to be told something like this?
So, when I got home, I went to several Auburn websites, to try to find something logical about this. Oh yes, I found all kinds of garbage, but of course, there isn’t anything logical about it. Looks like most of this stuff came out a couple of years ago, but it’s obviously still alive and kicking.
Honestly though, I really want to appeal to y’all to stop this particular brand of name-calling, and to remember we are all important members of the same SEC family. We can scrap and talk smack about each other 24-7, but there should still be an underlying respect, and yes, caring for everyone in the conference.
I understand that many of you will feel the need to air me out, here on this message board. And that’s OK. I forgive you. I know you’ve got to, as a matter of pride. But when somebody starts this chant up at the next game, even though you won't admit it here, maybe you’ll remember my hurt feelings while talking football with the Auburn fans in Gulf Shores, and decide not to take part, or better yet, ask your neighbor to shut it down.
Trash-talking football is one thing. A personal insult to an entire fan base is definitely another, just unnecessary and such a cheap shot. And it sure doesn’t reflect Southern hospitality.
Be better than that, Auburn. You ARE better than that. Thank you for your consideration. And Tiger to Tiger, we look forward to our next meeting out on the grid. Geaux Tigers!
