Of the four DC’s under Tuberville, Coach John Lovett posted the worst numbers but in his defense, he did not have the talent and depth the following DC’s possessed. Over the last three DC’s at Auburn, two numbers have remained constant. The average points allowed per game and the TD ratio allowed. Auburn has basically allowed about 15 pts per game and a TD every 37 plays from 2002-2007.
IMO, Coach Tuberville has a very good defensive philosophy he has maintained throughout his coaching tenure. He will hire defensive coaches that will put those philosophies in place. He believes in the 4-3, speed and making the opponent work for everything they get by limiting the big play. Every DC he has hired since coming to Auburn had a reputation of being aggressive with the blitz and every DC that has ever worked for him has adopted Tuberville’s approach for the most part.
It is the primary reason why Auburn has consistently been one of the top 20 defenses if not top ten in the country for the last six years running. Though I’m sadden with the departure of Coach Muschamp, I have no doubt Coach Tuberville will make the right hire for Auburn’s next defensive coordinator. With the talent and depth Auburn has coming back in 2008, there will be a lot of promising coaches wanting to fill the spot vacated by Muschamp. Obviously there will be adjustments to make with a new coach in the picture but I have no doubt Auburn will remain sound on defense as long as Coach Tuberville is calling the shots.
