"Wow! The Daily Double Of Former High School "

Edited by Author at 9/18/2007 - 9:59 p.m.

athlete and former high school referee. You got me there. I was never a high school referee.

I was a high school basketball coach for a while before I joined the real world, so I have a few preconceived notions about the intelligence of high school referees.* Thank you for breathing life into my stereotypes.

I'm not saying that a receiver should catch every ball that hits his hands. Gabe MacKenzie got absolutely #badword#canned on a long ball that hit his hands, but I can't fault him for dropping it. It was just a good play by the safety. I am saying that Bennett should have caught that first one (a fact you now seem to admit). I am also saying that Cox made a correct read and throw. As noted below by Trigger, you misstate the coverage. Bennett found a hole in the zone between defenders ( neither of whom were able to play him or the ball before it arrived and bounced off his hands). Cox delivered the ball on time and away from the closest defender. I guarandamtee you that if you asked Bennett, he will tell you he should have caught it and that it is a catch he makes consistently. If you ask his teammates, I will bet they will say that the pass was one Cole normally catches. And I bet that you will not find one of them who says Cox made a mistake on that throw.

The throw to the short guy in the flat, while open, has throwing lane issues (or at least it appears from your pics) and is going to gain about 2 yards on 1st and 23. The other guy hasn't even begun his break, so Cox would have to wait at least another count and probably 2 to throw to him. Given the kind of rush he has faced and the field position, that would be an error in judgment. Bennett is open for a catchable pass that is going to gain 8 yards and maybe one or two more if the backer struggles a little to get him down. That makes for a manageable 2nd down play.

I laugh my ass off every time you try to defend your theory. #badword#, the guy who picked it was not even one of the two defenders near Bennett. It was a sound decision by Cox that ended up in disaster because the ball was not caught. The same thing could have happened if had thrown to one of the other 2 receivers and the ball had bricked off their hands.

You may not be going away, but it seems that you are going alone on this one. You have met disagreement from current coaches, former players, and casual fans on the board (not to mention the former NFL QB on the telecast). Rebel DDS said it best here long ago: if you don't want to be ridiculed, then stop being ridiculous.

*I realize they are not all as profoundly stupid and stubborn as I believe them to be. Only some of them.

I laugh like hell when I hear you guys say... "when the ball hits you in the hands"... you guys sound like Chris, Lee and Kirk putting their ESPiN on things.

Those of us that have played TE, wide receiver  or back that has gone across the middle and gotten the #badword# knocked out of us by a Line Backer... will never make that comment. Now I know I wasn't good enough to make it to the next level, but I've taken that hit, and I've had to peal myself off of the field and find my way back to the huddle or sidelines. I also officiated HS football for 7 years and have seen it many, many times... from only a few yards away.

But I guess we aren't as good as all of you guys that have caught every pass that hit you in the hands.

Funny part of this... I never said the receiver didn't have ownership in this. I simply said the Cox made a bad decision to throw the ball into double coverage. Is that a fact? Yes, the outcome of the play indicates that. Oh and I provide evidence of my statement. Now everyone jumping my ass for that statement, seams to support throwing the ball into double coverage. I don't know of any coach that supports his QB throwing into double coverage especially when there are other receivers wide open. Now I know I'm going to have some super PeeWee coaches in here that will dispute this, but my guess is they are probably 2-14 in their coaching careers.

I'm just not going to go away. Am I?
