on NBC that day and how that wouldn't happen today. I tend to disagree. I think the US military is a victim of its own successes and the American people, and their media representatives tend to think that invasive war is easy. We blitzed through Kuwait and Iraq in '91, we ran roughshod over the crumbling Iraqi army in '03. Circumstances conspired to obscure the hardships that it truly takes. In 1944 we had never done such. Our military had exploded in growth over the previous 3 years and EVERYONE knew someone close to them who was either serving in Europe of the Pacific. It is only natural, given the scope of the ordeal, the skill of our enemies and the personal nature of the relationships that there would be prayers on NBC, CBS etc etc.
If something similar were to happen today, say America loses faith in the military watching the best and brightest being pissed away in Iraq, that forced us to make another huge invasion, say to retake an overrun South Korea. I'll bet everything in my checking account versus everything in anyone else's that the deadly serious tone of the news would resemble 1944, and we'd likely hear Presidents, Congressmen and Brian Williams on NBC offering prayers.
